In Happyforce, every manager and admin has a focus. The focus tells us what each person looks at and where they can act from, so each of them gets what helps them look after their people in their scope.
What is a focus?
The focus describes the role a person plays in the organization when it comes to looking after their people: whether they lead a team, coordinate other managers, lead people across the whole company…
With their focus, each person gets:
A personalized report, with what matters in their scope: their team, their areas or the whole company.
Recommendations and content tailored to their role in the organization.
Recommended actions: concrete steps to improve what's in their hands.
Focus, role and areas: how they differ
They are three different things that work together:
Role: what the person can do in Happyforce (employee, manager or admin).
Areas: which people a manager follows (for example, the North Sales team).
Focus: the perspective they look and act from (for example, Team leader).
Managers have assigned areas and a focus. Admins have a focus, but don't manage areas.
The 6 focus types
Team leader
Leads a team and follows the people who report to them.
Choose it if there are no areas below them.
Manager of managers
Coordinates other managers and follows their teams as a whole.
Choose it if other managers or several areas sit below them.
Leadership
Runs a large part of the organization and needs the big picture.
Choose it for executives, C-level and whoever runs the top area or a large part of the company.
HRBP
Supports their assigned areas from the people team.
Choose it for HRBPs or HR people who support specific areas.
People leadership
Leads the people strategy for the whole company.
Choose it for the head of HR or people.
Account administration
Sets up and manages the Happyforce account without following any team.
Choose it if they only manage the Happyforce account.
Who needs a focus?
Managers and admins: it's required. You can't save a manager or admin without a focus.
Employees: they don't have a focus.
When you make someone an admin, they start with the “Account administration” focus. You can change it if another one fits better.
Where to assign and change the focus
From People
Open the person, pick their role (manager or admin) and select their focus in the Focus field. If it's missing, you'll see the message “Managers and admins need a focus. Pick one before saving.”
With the bulk upload
The template includes the Management Focus column. Fill it in with one of these values:
Team leader:
TEAM_LEADManager of managers:
MANAGER_OF_MANAGERSLeadership:
EXECUTIVEHRBP:
PEOPLE_ADVISORPeople leadership:
PEOPLE_EXECUTIVEAccount administration:
ACCOUNT_ADMIN
If a manager or admin row doesn't have a valid focus, you'll see the error “Missing or invalid focus (required for managers and admins)”.
From My profile
Every manager or admin can change their own focus from My profile. Do it if your role has changed.
What happens when I change a focus?
The new focus is used for that person's next reports, recommendations and actions. Anything already generated doesn't change.
Frequently asked questions
An admin also leads a team. Which focus should I pick?
The one that best describes their main role. If they run part of the company, “Leadership”. If their work is in people, “People leadership” or “HRBP”. If they only set up Happyforce, “Account administration”.
Can a person have more than one focus?
No. Each person has a single focus: pick the one that best reflects where they act from.
What if I pick the wrong focus?
No problem: you can change it whenever you want from People, and each person can change their own from My profile.
Why does the bulk upload show an error on a row?
It's probably a manager or admin without a focus, or with a value that isn't in the list above. Check the Management Focus column.
What happens if my company’s structure changes?
It doesn’t affect how reports are generated. Each report is built from the people and areas that depend on each manager or admin on the day it’s generated. For example, if the structure changes in January, that person will get a report adapted to the new structure.
